  • U.S. wins, gets Cuba next
    In 10 innings, the U.S. had just two hits. In the 11th, it got three to four runs thanks to the new extra-innings rules. Those four would hold and with the win, the U.S. is set to play Cuba in the semis on Friday at 6a ET.

    Stephen Strasburg is about to make the biggest start of his young baseball career: in the medal round for the Americans.

    A marquee pitcher such as Boston's Daisuke Matsuzaka wearing Japan's colors come 2016: That's the image international baseball organizers are conjuring in their efforts to get the sport back on the Olympic program.



  • No. 1 seed goes to South Korea
    South Korea will enter the semifinals as the top seed following its drubbing of the Netherlands. It is the first time that Korea has finished pool play 7-0, as it goes for its first baseball medal since bronze in 2000.


  • Statement game: Cuba thumps China
    Apparently the Cuban team had a little steam to let out after losing to South Korea. A second-inning grand slam by Giorbis Duvergel was only the beginning of a 17-run barrage had at the expense of China.


  • U.S. advances to baseball semis
    John Gall & Co. can breathe a sigh of relief, the U.S. is going to the medal round. With the win over Chinese Taipei, the Americans join Cuba, Japan and South Korea with the ranking to be determined after Day 12.

    China catcher and top player Wang Wei underwent an exploratory arthroscopic procedure Tuesday, a day after he tore a ligament in his left knee and was knocked out of the game in a home-plate collision with Matt LaPorta of the United States.

    There's a new face atop international baseball, at least for a little while. South Korea defeated the unbeaten, defending Olympic champ Cuba. Ko Young-Min helped Korea's five-run fourth with two RBIs. 

  • Bean ball: U.S. hit five times, wins

    Quite the night at Wukesong Field. The U.S. got hit by pitches five times, two Chinese catchers got ran over and China coach Jim Lefebvre was ejected. Oh, and the U.S. is in control of its medal-round hopes at 3-2.



  • Nix won't rule out comeback

    Jayson Nix still has a bunch of stitches above his left eye and under the skin, too. It's bruised purple and yellow, still swollen and his vision is still a bit hazy.

    Someone needed to step up in the absence of 2007 World Cup MVP Jayson Nix. Enter Brian Barden. Nix's replacement at second base, Barden finished 2-for-5 with a home run in the Americans' much-needed win.
