Groove Theory was an American R&B and hip hop music duo formed in New York City in 1991 when singer Amel Larrieux met rapper Bryce Wilson through a mutual friend. The two found themselves perfect for each other as both were upset with the direction their career was taking. Wilson hoped to use the group as a chance to utilize his production talents while Larrieux wanted a chance to shine in R&B.
The group received a deal with Epic Records, and in 1995, they released their self-titled debut album Groove Theory. The album features the hit single "Tell Me" which reached number-five on the Billboard Hot 100 and number-three on the R&B chart. The single was certified gold.
Larrieux left the group in 1999 to pursue a solo career and Makeda Davis replaced her. The group signed with Columbia Records and recorded a new album, The Answer, which was expected for release in 2001. Before the album was released, the group was dropped from the label.
Today, Larrieux is continuing to pursue her solo career; she has released three solo albums. Wilson has appeared in several films, and he continues to write and produce for other musicians with Davis.
