ANOINTED WRITER: FROM THE GUTTER TO GLORY
A Once-Upon-a-Time Poverty-Stricken Girl Publishes Her First Novel
Duncanville, TX (BlackNews.com) - Twenty-one-year old Taryn Spencer wrote her first book at age sixteen, while she finished her schoolwork at H. Grady Spruce High School (in Dallas, Texas, now threatened to be shut down because of academic failures), where she attended all four years. She diligently worked on her novel until it was completed. She never knew, four years later, she would be publishing her manuscript on Lulu.com, the online marketplace for digital content.
Taryn Spencer's novel, Lyric's Spiritual Battle, is based on real-life experiences that the author endured growing up until she was eighteen. Those were the days that she watched her mother daily lose the battle to drugs and worthless men. Refusing to let her surroundings bring her down, Taryn found peace through prayer and writing.
One who
knew Spencer comments: "We knew what she was going through, but she never said anything about it. While we were trying to come up any way we could to make it out of the hood, she would go off by herself to write. She just kept her head up. I knew she would do something with this sooner or later. It was just bound to happen."
Also a poet, Spencer includes many of her poems throughout the novel. She is the African-American Sylvia Plath of her day. Each page pours out the struggles of winning battle after battle, as indicated in the novel, until victory is gained. The book is indeed a page-turner. It created such interest that the young writer's teachers often stopped class to read her writings.
Taryn Spencer says: "Everyone has their own story. Some may be horror stories, others may be romances. I think my story fits somewhere in between."
